When my daughter was born, there were many things that frightened me; am I feeding her enough, is she too warm, is she too cold, am I over stimulating her, am I stimulating her enough? All these questions can flood one's mind and it honestly becomes all consuming. The one thing I was particularly afraid of was taking her out of the house too soon. So, for many months I kept her hidden away from the world as if she were my very own Rapunzel. I thought it was for the best but little did I know what harm I was actually causing.

When we moved into our apartment in 2009 we never considered neighborhood schools. Newly married we were consumed with starting our life in the same city after many years of long distance. Walking in our new environment we could not help but notice the elementary school right up the street. Beyond liking the school’s name, Harriet Tubman Elementary School, there was nothing about it that drew our attention. That changed when Akira came into our lives.

Most of us agree that Art is a visual language. Ai Weiwei's Trace at the Hirshhorn is conceptually and artistically mind blowing. A carpet of LEGO portraits of political dissidents that speaks not just to adults but kids too. Now a preschooler, my 3 year old Akira has sketched versions of a self portrait, sometimes missing an eye or an ear of course. As we entered the exhibit he immediately gravitated to the floor wanting to get a closer look.

It allows them, and you, to express your emotions when you are lost for words. For me, it’s about the special moment of bonding, when your little one is anxiously waiting for you to flip the page to find out what happens next.
